In our design phase, we are incorporating eco-friendly practices through our use of sustainable materials, including those that have already been recycled or those that are more recyclable than previous choices in our packaging and despatch methods, whilst also making material-efficient changes, reducing our products footprint where pracitcal. This reflects our proactive commitment to considering environmental factors right from the start of our product development all the way through to shipping them to the customer.

Furthermore, in our production phase, we are working with our suppliers to optimise resource usage and minimise waste generation. By embracing both environmentally conscious design and manufacturing, we demonstrate our comprehensive commitment to responsible business practices and reducing our overall ecological footprint.

Reducing and recycling at Trend

At Trend, our sense of environmental responsibility guides our waste management approach.

We aim to limit waste generation during our operations through efficient practices. Our emphasis is on prevention, where we focus on minimizing resource usage to reduce waste at its source. When waste is unavoidable, our focus changes to recycling possibilities, diverting materials away from landfills to contribute to a circular economy.

Moreover, we conscientiously minimize waste directed towards incineration, recognizing and addressing the environmental implications associated with this method. This waste management strategy reflects our commitment to sustainability, ensuring that our business practices align with eco-friendly principles.

We are now using a minimum 30% recycled content on the pallet shrink wrap in our despatch operation, and using clear pallet shrink wrap which is also 100% recyclable. We have reduced the use of bubble wrap and moved away from plastic air bag pack-fill to using a paper cushion: saving 11 km of plastic per year. The use of plastic tape on packing cartons has been reduced, as we move to gummed paper tape.

By reviewing pallet-strap usage, we can also save over 2.8 km of strapping per single delivery into our distribution centres.

Efficiencies within the despatch operation include pallet consolidation which is running at about 10% and new packing workstations which ensure parcels are packed efficiently and quickly. Staff have had additional training to prevent overpacking and to reduce waste. The have also been trained about the impact of waste on the environment.

The WEEE regulations require that businesses involved in the supply of the electrical equipment take an active role in its collection, recycling and environmentally sound disposal. Trend Service Agents (TSA´s) can be used as collection points on our behalf for unwanted Trend electrical Products,

As a responsible web sale distance seller, we are also members of the national Distributor Take-back scheme (DTS) which financially supports the network of WEEE recycling centres established by local authorities.

Sustainable Packaging at Trend

We are committed to reducing the impact of our products to the environment through design and process.

Trend's sustainable packaging strategy is to remove plastic going to waste where possible, reduce all waste materials and use easily recyclable materials.

The first part of the strategy project was to review the current range of products to see what are already sustainable. The Trend range has fourteen product categories. The categories include power tools and power tool jig and accessories, including router cutters, saw blades and drilling tools, as well as hand tools including sharpening and measuring tools. The vast range of over 3400 products create challenges as they all have products that have various packaging requirements.

The main area of focus was the use of plastic packaging. Plastic clamshells being the Trend Professional and CraftPro router cutter ranges, sawblades, digital measuring tools and diamond sharpening. Over 50% of our range has had its packaging updated, with 76% of the range in the process of having packaging changed to be more sustainable and environmentally friendly.

The Trend micro-granular Tungsten Carbide Tipped range of sawblades are designed for a professional finish in softwood, hardwood, hardboard, plywood and particle board, and offera blade solution for every machine; whether it is a portable circular saw, mitre saw, or bench saw. As the blades are in high demand and the packaging used is a large plastic clamshell (double blister), it was decided that the first product category to change would be the sawblades, and from mid 2023 we began to switch to cardboard cartons.

TCT Sawblades

The Trend sawblades packaging used to comprise of a large plastic clamshell and it was decided that the first product category to change would be the sawblades, and from mid 2023 we began to switch to cardboard cartons.

It is estimated that 26 tonnes of plastic would be saved per year.

PCD Sawblades

The Trend PCD diamond saw blades have made the transition from clamshell to cardboard cartons.

Around 2.6 tonnes of plastic will be saved per year.

Router Cutters

We have found ways to improve our protective 'clamshell for Professional and CraftPro ranges of cutters, wherever possible, by changing the plastic from PVC to 30% recycled PET.

This will save 5 tonnes of PVC from becoming landfill.

Measuring & Marking Tools

The digital measuring range was moved from a plastic clamshell to cardboard, as part of our sustainable packaging strategy.

The switch will save about 2.4 tonnes of plastic every year.

Diamond Sharpening Tools

Trend’s diamond sharpening range packaging used to comprise of a mix of plastic clamshell and blister packaging, and we are now switching to using only cardboard boxes.

The change will save over 270 kg of plastic per year from landfill.

Hand Tools

Trend’s Multiscribe Pro and Corner Chisel were packaged in a plastic sliding blister packaging. As part of the initiative, they were changed to cardboard boxes.

The estimated saving per year is over 300kg of plastic.

Abrasives

From launch, the highly successful Trend range of abrasives have been packaged in cardboard boxes.

We are now in the process of changing to a minimum 50% post-consumer recycled content.

Pocket Hole Screws

The Trend pocket hole screws were previously supplied in plastic ‘clamshell’ packaging, which has now been replaced by cardboard boxes.

This change is estimated to save 2.3 tonnes of plastic entering the waste stream per year.

The Trend PCD diamond saw blades will make the transition from clamshell to cardboard cartons. Around 2.6 tonnes of plastic will be saved per year.

Trend is the leading brand in the UK for router cutters. There are three main ranges, the Professional Range, Trade Range and the CraftPro range, and with over 1300 router cutters available.

The Trend clamshell storage device used for the Professional Range and CraftPro ranges of cutters is designed to ensure they meet the key requirements of cutter protection and safe storage. The packaging for some router cutters also has compartments to store accessory ball bearings and hex key.

As the packaging design provided the best option for the tools it was decided that we would change the plastic from PVC to 30% recycled PET plastic where possible. This change began over 12 months ago, saving 5 tonnes of PVC plastic going to landfill at the end of life.
